WhatsApp just added a new feature that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help you catch up on your unread messages faster. It’s called Message Summaries, and it’s now available in English for users in the United States. More countries and languages will be added soon.

What Is Message Summaries?

Instead of reading through all your unread messages one by one, WhatsApp can now give you a quick summary. This summary is made by Meta AI, the same company that owns WhatsApp. It shows the key points of the unread messages using easy-to-read bullet points.

You can see the summary by tapping the number of unread messages in a chat. The summary is private—only you can see it. If you don’t want to use it, you can turn it off anytime.

Is My Privacy Protected?

Yes, WhatsApp says your messages stay private. They use something called Private Processing, which means even Meta or WhatsApp can’t read your messages when the summary is created. Other people in the chat won’t see the summary either.

The feature is off by default, so you’ll need to turn it on if you want to use it. You can also choose which chats can use the AI feature by going into your privacy settings.

More AI Features Are Coming

This new feature is part of a bigger plan by Meta to bring AI tools into WhatsApp. Recently, they added the Meta AI button, which lets you ask questions or create images during a chat. These tools are already active by default and can’t be turned off.

Ads in WhatsApp?

Earlier this month, WhatsApp also made news by testing advertisements in the app—a move that the original creators of WhatsApp were against. It’s still unclear when or where these ads will officially roll out.
